Clinical Considerations for Individuals with Progressive Neurological Disorders.

The evaluation of seating and positioning components and power base selection for patients with a progressive neurological disease requires a comprehensive, detailed evaluation of their medical, environmental, and Assistive Technology needs to ensure a successful outcome in maximizing independent mobility and function. Evidenced based practice will be used to describe seating and positioning recommendations and complex problem solving and evaluation skills will be discussed to evaluate their affect on the fit and function of the chair in the individual’s environment. The integration of alternative drive controls, environmental control units and computer access will be discussed.

Learning Objectives:
1) Participants will recognize at least one advantage and disadvantage of the variations between rear, mid, front wheel drive for patients with a progressive disease.
2) Participants will name at least four considerations involved in the selection of seating and power positioning options.
3) Participants will demonstrate an understanding of the selection of wheelchair accessories to accommodate the changes associated with progressive disorders.
4) Participants will also demonstrate an understanding of how to integrate Assistive Technologies in order to maximize functional independence.
