Pediatric Power Mobility

This half day course will explore power mobility for children, including very young children, in a fast paced and interactive format. Children are typically very mobile. Mobility serves as means to get from one location to another, as with adults. Yet for children, mobility also serves other purposes such as exploration, play, sensory input and learning. Research has demonstrated that children as young as 18 months can operate a power wheelchair. Research also indicates that independent mobility is critical to the development of visual perceptual skills, early learning concepts and developing a sense of independence. This course will explore these issues in depth, as well as cover assessment to determine if a child is an appropriate candidate for a power wheelchair, how the child will access or operate that wheelchair, choosing the best power wheelchair base for a child and mobility training to optimize driving efficiency, independence and safety.
